In the first quarter of 2010 law firm mergers overall were down over first quarter of 2009. Several notable mergers included the merger of Hogan & Hartson in the United States with the English firm Lovells to become Hogan Lovells, with $1.8B in revenue and over 2500 attorneys in forty offices worldwide; the United States firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal with the English firm Denton Wilde Sapte which will become SNR Denton with over 1250 attorneys worldwide. Other global mergers included United States firm Norton Rose with the Australian firm Deacons to become Norton Rose Group with giving the new merged firm 12 new offices across Australia.

Current merger talks in the second quarter in the United States include confidential discussions between the National firm Kilpatrick Stockton and the San Francisco Intellectual Property boutique Townsend Townsend and Crew. Kilpatrick has an excellent national Intellectual Property practice and the merger will give them a number of new offices as a base on the west coast of the United States. Legal rumors predict that an announcement could come in the second quarter.

In the second third and fourth quarter of 2010 legal analysts predict that merger activity will grow and continue at a faster pace as firms coming out of the global recession begin to reconsider their global strategy and strategic growth for the future.
