Law firm mergers are still being at by major firms throughout the United States and in Europe and Asia along with significant practice groups and lateral partners. In the worlds current economic environment law firms are just being more cautious when considering mergers as a growth strategy says Vice President Mike Webb of McKinley.
There were several notable mergers in the first and second quarter of 2009 including: the merger of Chicago firm Bell Boyd & Lloyd with the International Pittsburgh firm K&L Gates; the merger of the London firm Grundberg Mocatta Rakison with the International Richmond firm McGuireWoods; the Irvine California firm MacPherson Kwok with the Dallas firm Haynes & Boone; and the Mexican firm DeOvando y Martinez del Campo with the International firm Jones Day.
With over thirty law firm mergers in just the first and second quarter of 2009, and with only fifty five total law firm mergers in 2008, this can only mean one thing. Law firms even in the economic recovery of 2009 are still looking at mergers as an opportunity, and at a very brisk pace.
